Artist Spotlight: Jane

“My name is Jane, I am 57 years old. . . I have an interest in past human activity, natural science, and the history of visual communication. Just outside my door, I find stem points, and other artifacts dating back to the Middle Archaic period, and as late as the 1800’s during the time they were wiped out by settlers and disease. Using microscopy I photograph what I find outside in nature: pieces of bone, coal, wood, metal, and other organic materials. I also carve human figures of archaic man out of wood. . . I have carved wood since [I was] in my 20s. I started taking pictures so that I could get a closer look at arrowheads that appeared to have small etchings – I found the pictures beautiful to look at and have well over 5,000. I find art and nature both help me relax. I believe anyone autistic or not could benefit from the freedom of artistic expression and alone time, silent in nature.” – Jane
