Taking advantage of a moribund construction industry, in a region where community support for an autism community is high combined with relatively minimal legislative constraints, Madison House Autism Foundation is working with a team of experts to construct a prototype residential community for individuals with autism and other intellectual disabilities located near a retirement community where parents may wish to reside.
The model will borrow from the best of for-profit senior living concepts, engage community, cultural, university and legislative partners, and be designed as a scalable, replicable model. Its success will encourage acceptance by communities currently opposed to something in their neighborhoods, inspire engagement of additional partners, provide a starting point and living laboratory for those who will actively participate, and demonstrate the importance of special needs trust legislation that builds revenue streams and reduces impact on overburdened governments.
