When children are diagnosed with autism, our nation invests generously in services to help to promote learning and to develop their unique talents and interests. But when children with autism become adults with autism, that help vanishes.
The adult autism population has been an unseen population but it impacts every neighborhood in the country. The Autism After 21 Breakfast brings together these thought leaders to learn about what adult autism is and how many of the decisions they make over the course of their careers and tenures can help shape brighter futures for adults with autism, but first of all they need to know more about these individuals.
In a very entertaining and informative event we bring together thought leaders to be with their friends and peers to lean more about the public health crisis of adult autism, including a price tag of over $360B per year (including direct services and lost wages for family members having to drop out of the workforce to care for their adult family members with autism)…more than the combined cost of all cancers combined. 30 years ago the prevalence was 1/2500, in 2022 it is 1/44. According to recent numbers from the CDC, Maryland has one of the highest prevalence rates for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States. In Maryland there are approximately 124,000 (2% of the population). Adding family members, such as two parents and two siblings, at a minimum, that number rises to approximately 618,000 impacted by autism in Maryland. With early diagnosis and preventative healthcare, community inclusion, job readiness training and meaningful activities as well as appropriate and safe housing, this staggering cost can be reduced significantly. While these individuals with autism have a wide array of challenges they also have a wide array of abilities.
Join our distinguished speakers in celebrating the abilities of adults with autism at our Autism After 21 Breakfast from 7:15AM-9:30AM on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

Madison House Autism Foundation (MHAF) was created 14 years ago and has been a leader in issues facing adults living with autism and their families. We have participated on the national stage, have become a leader in issues of housing and have been instrumental in helping to shape positive policies nationally to better the lives of adults with autism.
We established April 21st as Autism After 21 Day and it has been declared in Congress for the past six years. It has been an effort to bring thought leaders, policy makers and elected officials and employers together to help develop greater more positive attitudes for inclusion and to see the potential of individuals living with autism and related disabilities.
Seven years ago Madison Fields became a project of Madison House Autism Foundation. This beautiful farm is 400 acres situated in the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County in Dickerson, Maryland. This farm gives the Foundation the opportunity to work locally to improve lives with our community while at the same being a prototype of things that can be done to enhance the lives and well-being of individuals with autism and their families.
Madison House Autism Foundation has developed strong ties in the corporate world and believes that our innovative collaboration and support for our partners’ initiatives and goals promotes the value of inclusion. When large corporations support and endorse the value of inclusivity, people listen and it paves the way for others to follow suit.
