Maryland photographer and graduate student, Katie Dance, has been photographing the autism community for several years. In capturing the everyday lives of children on the spectrum, she grew intrigued by a population that is often invisible to mainstream society – autistic adults. Over the course of a few weeks, Katie focused her work on one family dealing with, not only the struggles associated with autism, but the illness of a parental caretaker. This project proved to be more compelling than she ever expected.
Madison House Autism Foundation commends Katie and others like her for bringing the stories of autism families to light. These personal anecdotes are pivotal in raising awareness of the large, complex, and difficult issues impacting autistic adults and their families across the country. Katie Dance is a documentary photographer and Master of Arts candidate at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She has a passion for visual storytelling and long-term documentary work. Dance received her BFA in Photojournalism from Corcoran College of Art + Design in 2013.
